The Story

Bringing A Speargun To A Knife Fight

On a warm Florida day, Warren Hunt geared up his kayak with all of his spearfishing essentials. He loaded his dive gear, dive flag, and a chum block.

Warren had a strenuous day ahead of him. He was about to paddle 4 miles offshore in search of some of the larger fish Florida has to offer.

On Edge

After a couple of hours of paddling, Warren could barely see shore. He decided he was at his spot, so he dropped down the chum block.

Warren, being the experienced spearo he is, waited a few minutes for the chum to start working its magic.

Now, if this were me, I’d be on edge already. Four miles offshore by yourself, dragging a chum block off a kayak in Florida? My mind would start telling me stories of all the sharks waiting below.

But Warren is a proper Floridian and doesn’t fear the unknown.

Underwater

Warren began to make his dives. Getting into the groove, he began to assimilate to the underwater world.

Then, while on the bottom, Warren heard the distinctive hum of an engine. All of a sudden, his anchor began to rise next to him.

Then it hit him—someone was trying to steal his kayak.

Confrontation

He shot to the surface.

Once breaking the water line, his fears were realized. A guy was trying to steal his kayak.

“What the f***! Drop the kayak!”

The thief was clearly caught off guard and left speechless.

Warren’s hand emerged from the water, pointing a loaded speargun.

The wannabe pirate was scared s***less. He started giving everything back—the kayak, dive flag, and all of his stuff. Fearing he was going to get a harpoon through the leg, he apologized endlessly.

Warren got all of his gear back and made it home safely that day.

This story comes from Warren Hunt. An avid spearfisher and marine collector living in Clearwater, FL.

Spear-cation Destination

Cyprus

Today we’re traveling to the Island of Cyprus. Nikos Nikolaou, a local from the island, gives an inside look on what this Mediterranean paradise has to offer.

Republic of Cyprus is a subtropical paradise that any spearo would love to explore. Lucky for us, our friend Nikos not only dives Cyprus on a weekly basis but is also a writer! So when we asked him some questions, we received some beautifully written responses.

Introduce Cyprus spearfishing

Sometimes it feels as if I am entering another dimension in space. It is so surreal how different everything feels. The soothing silence, crystal clear water. That weird but familiar sound under the water. Schools of amberjacks circling me. Barely holding myself still at the bottom. I am 3 meters deep, such wild beauty.

What makes spearfishing in Cyprus unique?

It is easy to reach stunning coastline, crystal -clear waters all year round. The sea is calm and warm. You can fish in many different depths. I sometimes fish in 1 meter depth and other times in 12 meters or even more. Other divers I know fish 30 or even 40 meters deep.

There is this nature paradise called Akamas (pictured below). It is amazing for camping and spearfishing. You need a 4x4 car or a boat to reach it. Keep it clean please.
