Hey there, spearos. This is The Stone Shot, your weekly dose of spear content (and maybe some fishing, but we try to keep it below the water line)

If you’re new around here, every first Thursday of the month I send out the DIVER email. What’s that, you ask? Let me break it down for you:

Interesting

Speaking of Riffe, Outdoor magazine just did a feature on what of their coolest ambassadors - Kimi Werner!

You can check out the article here, but the essence is that Kimi Werner went from a young girl on Maui, tagging along with her father to spearfish for food, to a seasoned diver who’s rediscovered the balance between passion and simplicity. Growing up with minimal resources, Kimi learned the value of sustainability early on. Her family’s lifestyle of respecting the ocean and land deeply influenced her, instilling a love for both fishing and food.

Over the years, Kimi transformed this childhood love into a meaningful practice, winning championships and later walking away from competition to reconnect with her roots. Today, she spearfishes not just as a sport, but as a way to feed her family and live harmoniously with nature. Dive into her full story on Outside for an inspiring look at her life.

Maybe we can get Kimi as a Community Spotlight!

This is such a cool angle!

At first I thought it was AI.

Environment

As most people know, yesterday was the US election. And no matter what side you’re on or who you voted for, we can all agree on one thing: fishing and hunting should be a human right. With the passing of Amendment 2 in Florida yesterday, that right is now protected. This isn’t about opposing the FWC or conservation efforts; it’s about recognizing our shared heritage and ensuring access to these traditions for future generations.

Also - how in the heck did 32% of people vote against this 🤔

Story:

“We got dropped off on the pressure side of a rock, as soon as the bubbles cleared we could see a large school of Kingfish swimming into the current below us. It was a race to load our guns, I happened to load first and dived down about 5m into the school, I picked the fish I wanted and shot. Not the best shot but solid. The fish went deep pulling my first float down about 10m till my 5m bungee went tight. I made ground on the fish quickly sliding my first float down my hard line. The Kingfish made one last solid run down to about 30m but couldn't sustain it for long. After about 10mins I called out to the boat for a second gun which I quickly loaded and swam down to about 7m and placed a good holding shot through the head of the Kingfish. I pulled it up the last 7 or 8 meters and ikied it. I then swam the fish to the boat where they passed a gaff to me and I placed it through its bottom jaw and passed it back to them and they pulled it onboard.”

I hope you enjoyed this months DIVER email!
