The Question

What To Eat While Spearfishing?

Everyone has their own strategy on what to eat/drink on dive day. Some people won’t eat until they’re done diving for the day. Others eat meticulously in between each dive.

And I wish I could tell you that it’s all about personal preference, but to get the most out of your body and your dives, you might want to subscribe to the latter.

Dive fatigue is a real thing, here are a few ways to combat it.

Hydration Matters

First and foremost, stay hydrated. It sounds like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many spearos forget to drink until they're parched.

Keep a bottle within arm's reach on the boat, aiming for at least 500ml per hour. The key is to sip throughout the day to stay hydrated without feeling like a water balloon when you're back in the water.

What to drink? Water is the MVP, but if you want a little flavor, go for a light juice mix with a touch of rehydrate. Steer clear of sugary sodas – they'll mess with your sinuses and might turn your dive into a bubbly mess.

Fuel for the Hunt

Now, let's talk about feeding that hardworking body of yours. Eating too much or the wrong things can impact your performance. Aim for easily digestible carbohydrates with a low Glycemic Index.

Baby potatoes or sweet potatoes are a great snack – easy to munch on during breaks without affecting your dive performance.

But let’s be honest, most people won’t prep potatoes the night before. So for us lazy folks, we turn to bananas. Bananas are fantastic for a quick, natural energy boost and a good potassium kick. Potassium helps with endurance and muscle recovery.

After the Dive: Recovery Mode

Feeding your muscles after a long dive is vital, especially if you're on a multi-day diving spree. A good whey protein formula will aid muscle recovery, preparing your body for another day in the underwater playground.

Post-dive, gulp down a rehydrate mix to replenish lost minerals and electrolytes. Skip the caffeinated energy drinks – they'll just dehydrate you more.

Detox for Dive

Your liver works hard during those deep dives, and dehydration adds to the strain. Consider a liver tonic or herbal remedy like Milk Thistle to detox and enhance endurance. Trust us; you'll thank us the next day when you wake up feeling more alive than hungover.

The Cold Beer Dilemma

We get it - nothing beats a cold beer after a day of epic dives. But if you're aiming for top form the next day, consider the toll alcohol takes on your hydration levels.

But if you’re like us and are ok with less than top form…well, one coldie never hurt anyone.

Cheers!

Spear-cation Destination

Zadar, Croatia

We’re ramping up our destination spotlights by reaching out to locals from the locations we’re featuring!

This week, we spoke with Marko Kovačević from Zadar, and he gave us some great local knowledge.

In the coastal city of Zadar, Croatia, the Adriatic Sea whispers tales of ancient civilizations. Nestled between historic Roman ruins and medieval churches, the azure waters of the Adriatic offer a playground for those seeking an immersive and primal connection with the sea.

Marko tells us about the wide variety of spearfishing in Zadar. From deep drops to the shallows, Zadar offers year-round spearfishing for all levels.

Spearfishing in Zadar Archipelago is unique. We have multiple Islands and multiple terrains. Here, you can spearfish in open water, shallow creeping or deep creeping - basically you can use all technics in spearfishing around our coast. We have rocky terrains that are good for spearing. Also our outer island have many nice places for spearfishing, usually there we catch Dentex…big ones.

It's good for experienced [spearos] and for beginners.
